Within the Practice October 2008Recent Seminars"Keeping it in the Family"Tricia was pleased to host this seminar with Dickinson Dees at the Charter, Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham in September. Running your personal affairs is becoming more and more complex. Mortgages, investments and pensions are all now strictly regulated and require specialist guidance. Using the Windsor family as a case study the two teams addresses legal issues, tax pointers and financial matters facing the generations within the family structure. "Death and Taxes"A similarly themed seminar to explore the opportunites after the Chancellor's recent tax changes was held with Nicholson Portnell Solicitors at the Tynedale Function Conferencing Centre in Hexham in October. In this instance, the case study family was the Archers of Ambridge, particularly focussing on the older generation Jack and Peggy Woolley and their planning challenges in respect of wills and health care, Brian and Jennifer Aldridge (the middle generation) and their various children (the younger generation) Brian and Jennifer have two adult children, Jennifer has two offspring from previous relationships and Brian has a son who is the same age as his grandchildren and this, together with his diverse business interests, poses interesting problems, not untypical of those facing non-fictional families in the real world.
Hexham AbbeyTricia and Adrian were delighted to host two tables at the recent Candlelit Gala Dinner in the magnificent setting of Hexham Abbey. This is the second such event that the Abbey has hosted to raise funds for the campaign to acquire and develop the former Priory Buildings adjacent to the Abbey. The aim is to provide a resource centre to share the remarkable story of the Abbey and its place in history and provide facilities for Hexham town and visitors alike. Greeted on arrival with a champagne reception, the guests were entertained by an organ and trumpet fanfare, a three course dinner with wine and an after-dinner speech by Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor of the Universities of Newcastle and Oxford and former Governor of Hong Kong. There was a Charity Auction and Raffle and it is anticipated that some £10,000 wil have been raised from the event The Abbey recently completed the final stage of a funding application to the North Pennines LEADER+ programme for the "Discover Hexham Abbey" project. One of the requirements was for an accountant, independent of the PCC's own financial advisers, to provide an independent examination of the project Tricia was delighted for the Practice to be involved in carrying out this assignment which helped to secure the funding. The Discover Hexham Abbey project was, in part, aimed at increasing and coordinating opportunities and support for local people to undertake volunteering as Hexham Abbey Stewards or in other volunteering capacities related to the Abbey's welcome of tourists. The provision of training and experience in these areas will provide an enhanced experience for visitors and an asset to the community. This, together with additional publicity and marketing of the Abbey which the funding allows, will benefit tourism as a whole in Tynedale and develop further the links between Hexham Abbey and the town. With the Dipton Mill Inn being the Practice's 'local' Tricia was delighted to be able to sponsor the three beers, brewed by Geoff Brooker at the Hexhamshire Brewery. At the festival, there were identifying banners above the points at the bar at which each beer was being served and, as can be seen in the picture below, the sponsors name also featured on the banners.
